Purpose

Created by the Texas Constitution as fund in the state treasury administered by the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. 

The constitutional amendment transferred $3 billion from General Revenue to the fund on January 1, 2026. The Legislature may appropriate up to $300 million from the fund per fiscal year (not including unexpended balances).

Money in the fund may be used to make research grants on dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and related disorders, and on the prevention, treatment and symptom mitigation of such diseases. Fund amounts may also be used for the purchase, construction, or renovation of facilities and on the institute's operation and fund management. Authorized grant recipients are required to have matching amounts equal to one-half of the grant amount received from the institute.
