The permit fee under 623.0172 applies to intermodal shipping containers operating in certain areas near the Texas/Arkansas border. The permit fee is initially set not to exceed $2,000. Beginning in 2022, on September 1 of each even-numbered year, the department shall set the fee based on a reasonable estimate of the costs associated with the operation of permitted vehicles in this area, including any increased highway repair costs.
Fee revenue is allocated between the State Highway Fund (90%), the Department of Motor Vehicles Fund (5%) and local county road and bridge funds (5%).
